Artificial Intelligence: a hot topic at IDS

This year, IDS celebrated its 100th birthday. Although some visitors were disappointed with the lack of a giant birthday cake, what the event lacked in candles it made up for in showcasing digital dental workflow innovations, sustainability initiatives and inflatable dinosaur costumes. Since some of our clients were promoting their new AI-powered software at IDS, it was a great opportunity to show our support. We were also eager to learn how other companies were using AI to empower their customers.

The multi-level, 7-hall exhibition was packed with so many exhibitors featuring AI-backed tech that even Argus Panoptes would have struggled to see it all. From AI-enhanced practice management software to implant planning, AI saturated every floor. Although the technology we saw was cool, we wanted to find the AI companies that were exhibiting.

It took some effort, but we found them. Like the Dancing Sasquatch guy, there they were, rocking out on their own. We will use this post to give an overview of these AI-exclusive exhibitors at IDS, provide a summary of their technology and highlight their contribution to the dental industry. Lastly, we will briefly explain how Relu differs from them.

Similar to SmileCloud, Preteeth AI allows for a comprehensive assessment and simulation of a person’s smile, accounting for landmarks such as the facial midline, gingival line and overall aesthetics. This technology enhances patient communication, increases treatment efficiency, and improves patient satisfaction by enabling them to make informed decisions about their smile goals. The simulation includes options such as crown lengthening, veneer or crown application, and tooth bleaching.

Atomica

Headquarters: USA

Business type: B2C

Deployment type: Cloud

Purpose of AI: Implant Planning

Currently focused on implantology, Atomica works with CBCT scans to help automate implant treatment planning. Using a guided workflow, the platform allows for automatic implant placement, as well as the design and printing of static surgical guides. Additionally, they generate a surgical planning report and step-by-step drilling protocol based on the plan. For the dental industry, Atomica’s platform may offer GPs a comprehensive tool to begin planning and performing basic implant placements.

DeepCare

Headquarters: China

Business type: B2C

Deployment type: Cloud

Purpose of AI: Segmentation and Implant Planning

DeepCare’s dental AI platform provides dentists with a second opinion on diagnosis and treatment by performing analysis for seven types of oral images. Their tool can identify over 30 dental pathology and restoration conditions, and includes a dental Chatbot which provides a personalized report of the patient’s oral health. In a field where patient treatment acceptance rates are as low as 10%, DeepCare aims to increate treatment acceptance rates in the dental care. They also process CBCT scans to enable image reconstruction and segmentation for use in treatment planning.

Diagnocat

Headquarters: USA

Business type: B2C

Deployment type: Cloud

Purpose of AI: Segmentation, Implant Planning and Diagnostics

Diagnocat's web-based software provides dentists with an automatic diagnostics report for 3D CBCT's, Panoramic radiographs, bitewings and periapical radiographs using AI. The report includes 65 different conditions. Apart from diagnostics, Diagnocat also offers CBCT segmentations together with a web-based viewer. The newcomer during IDS was automatic implant planning for single dental implants.

Pearl

Headquarters: USA

Business type: B2C

Deployment type: Cloud

Purpose of AI: Diagnostics

Similar to other AI tools, Pearl offers a second opinion by automatically detecting a variety of pathologies on bitewings and periapical radiographs. Unlike other companies, Pearl has been actively integrating their software inside of other software like Planmeca Romexis or CareStack and has received FDA clearance. Pearl also offers Practice Intelligence where it uses the data of a dental practice and insights created from their Second Opinion AI to suggest ways to improve the ROI of the practice.

Velmeni

Headquarters: USA

Business type: B2C

Deployment type: Cloud

Purpose of AI: Diagnostics

Velmeni analyzes 2D and 3D X-rays to identify dental pathologies and restorations and produces smart treatment recommendations. Allowing the user to both hide and reveal specific categories of each to reduce confusion on a scan, they are also able to identify hard-to-see pathologies that may be missed by a dentist. Velmeni generates a patient specific report that can be shared with the patient or an insurance company to build trust and ensure treatment coverage and reimbursement.

Dentbird

Comparing Relu to the rest

If you read our previous blog, you already have a good idea on what Relu does. For those that haven’t read it, please do. We’ll wait.

Assuming you’ve finished, let’s reiterate: Relu creates AI algorithms that process and segment structures of the skull from CBCT and intra-oral scans for use in digital dental treatment planning software. The outputs of our technology are highly accurate 3D digital copies of structures such as a patient’s mandible, teeth or sinuses. Let’s highlight how Relu differs from the IDS AI exhibitors companies below.

Scope

Many of the listed exhibitors focus on 2D and/or 3D diagnostics, whereas Relu specializes in automatically segmenting, aligning and fusing CBCT and intra-oral scans. While some of the platforms include segmentation, this is not their primary focus. Our AI is trained on thousands of data sets ranging in difficulty to produce accurate outputs no matter the complexity of the case.

Target

Although Relu has a web-app, our core business is to offer our technology as an integration/plugin to other dental treatment planning software companies or providers. We do not provide our technology directly to dentists, clinics or labs. Our technology is designed for easy integration so that other software can leverage our AI technology under their own brand, making us a B2B Enterprise partner.

Deployment

Cloud deployments are growing in popularity and make it possible to access and share patient data on-the-go. In this increasingly complex age of data protection, however, Relu is mindful of our clients’ local and international data privacy compliance mechanisms, so we offer both an on-premise SDK or Cloud API integration to our partners.
